Log Burning Stoves, Stove Types

Wood burning stoves are a completely different beast to what they were even a few years ago and a world away from open fires. Open fires only have an efficiency of about 25% compared to wood burning stoves which are 70 to 80% efficient. Also with an open fire a lot of the heat goes up the chimney and as there is no control of the air for the fire this air is drawn from the house causing drafts. Obviously the higher the efficiency then the less fuel you would need to use (fewer trips to the log store) and if you are paying for logs then the more cost effective it will be to run.
